Name:Ms Lorato Koosaletse
Degree & Area of Study:Master of Social Health (Psychology) (2007); BSc Psychology (2003)
News:Hi all,
I'm sitting at my desk in a tiny office in Botswana and missing the hectic days of submitting assignments and THE Thesis!!

I do miss Sydney and Macquarie, which for 6 years was my home away from home.

I now work for a Christian based organisation named Botswana Christian AIDS Intervention Programme (BOCAIP). I am a centre coordinator and we have two projects at the moment. One is an HIV voluntary counselling and testing service where we test people for this virus. Under this project we also offer counselling for all sorts of psychosocial challenges faced by people either infected or affected by the virus. we have contributed to 53% of Batswana testing themselves and knowing their status, which feels good but we need the other 47% to catch up.

The other project is aimed at Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.In this project we talk to expectant women and their partners on the importance of preventing transmission to the child (if the mother is HIV positive); to mother frm father and if both are HIV positive then we stress the importance of preventing re-infection.

It can be very fulfilling working with these mothers and watching them raise their HIV negative children. The only problem is that men do not fully participate in it and there is also the challenge of repeated pregnancies from the HIV positive women. Nonetheless I have hope that things will get better and that we will be able to forge ahead in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
