Scholarships, Awards and Prizes
The Alumni Office provides scholarships, awards and prizes to current students and alumni. Alumni donations and University memorabilia purchases support many of these. Through the generosity of alumni and friends, we will be able to increase the number of scholarships, awards and prizes available to deserving students.
Donations to support awards are welcome at any time. Please let us know if you would like to support a particular prize, or even set up a new prize. Your gift will be gratefully acknowledged.
Alumni Awards for Distinguished Service
These awards recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of Macquarie University alumni, in Australia and throughout the world. The awards highlight the diversity and quality of the contributions our alumni have made within their chosen fields and within the community.
Nominations for the 2007 Awards closed on 28 March 2008.
Macquarie University has appreciated the nominations which were put forward for these prestigious awards.
Award winners will be recognised for their contribution to the following:
- the arts
- science and technology
- health and associated sciences
- business and commerce
- educational leadership
- management
- community service
- research
- other areas
A minimum of two awards will be made each year – one award to a graduate who has demonstrated outstanding service to the community, and one to a graduate who has made an outstanding contribution in their chosen field. The selection panel may choose to present additional awards based on the contributions of our alumni.

Alumni Awards Ceremony
The 2008 Macquarie University Alumni Awards Ceremony will be held in the U@MQ Building on campus on Wednesday 4 June 2008.
Macquarie University’s first Alumni Awards Ceremony evolved with the presentation of the Science Prize in 1991. Since then, awards, scholarships and prizes have been presented annually to recognise and honour the outstanding academic achievements of Macquarie students, as well as the diversity and quality of contributions made by our alumni to their chosen fields and within their communities in Australia and throughout the world.
The Alumni Relations Office works with the Standing Committee of Convocation to allocate the funds for these awards, prizes and scholarships. The University aims to raise additional funds through the alumni and other networks to provide even more awards and scholarships for students.

Recipients of Alumni Award for Distinguished Service
2006 recipients
- Ms Catherine Livingstone (Professional Category) for her outstanding contribution to both technological and management innovation in her executive and Board of Director roles in Australian business and education.
- Ms Christine Nixon, APM (Community Category) for her outstanding contribution to the community through her role as Chief commissioner of the Victoria Police. In an interview with ABC's Peter Thompson Christine commented that she did, "... politics and philosophy at Macquarie University and that Macquarie was a great place to learn and think about ethics and integrity and about the social issues around policing and politics of violence".
- Mr Peter Sjoquist, AM (Community Category) for his outstanding contribution to promoting positive personal development of young people, in particular, promoting positive and healthy lifestyle messages for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in rural and remote areas of Australia through Croc Festival and the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.
2005 recipients
- Dr Jenny Harry (Professional Category) for her outstanding contribution to biological sciences and in particular for promoting business opportunities for and application of Proteome Systems.
- Dr Judy Cashmore (Community Services Category) for her outstanding contribution to psychology and the law, in particular to a commitment to the care and protection of young children and the education of the legal profession in dealing with children.
- The Hon. Mrs Helen Sham-Ho for her outstanding contribution as a solicitor, a Member of the NSW Parliament and supporter for improved social order, in particular her contribution to multicultural principles and precepts, social justice and equity including improved relations with Indigenous people.

- Professor John Croucher (Professional Category) for his outstanding contribution to the Mathematical and Statistical Profession
- Ms Tonia Godhard AM (Professional Category) for her outstanding contribution to the Early Childhood Profession
- Dr Greg Taylor (Professional Category) for his outstanding contribution to the Actuarial Profession

The Macquarie University Family Scholarship (supported by the University's Alumni)
Awarded to an immediate family member of an Alumnus/Alumna to encourage the legacy of family members attending Macquarie University across generations. One $5000 scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial hardship and one $5000 scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit.
The Macquarie University Honours Scholarship (supported by the University's Alumni)
Awarded to a student pursuing full-time or part-time study in a Bachelor Honours program. It is a needs-based scholarship to encourage research in any discipline. It is valued at $5000 tenable for one year.
Macquarie University International Scholarships for Alumni
Macquarie University encourages the further education of its graduates. Each semester, 4 scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to Macquarie University alumni who are commencing further studies at Macquarie.
To be eligible students must meet all requirements of the Macquarie University International Scholarship and must be applying for a higher level of study than previously undertaken.

Higher Degree Research Excellence Prize
Awarded to the two top-ranked alumni scholarship applicants in the Australian Postgraduate Award and Endeavour International Postgraduate Research round.
Awarded for the first time in 2008.

The Macquarie University Kathryn Murphy Memorial Prize (supported by the University's Alumni)
Awarded to the female student with the most meritorious performance proceeding to the honours degree of Bachelor in Division of Economic and Financial Studies. Currently valued at $2,500.
The Macquarie University Raymond Powys Memorial Prize (supported by the University's Alumni)
Awarded to the student with the most meritorious performance over all units in the Master of Commerce in Accounting and Finance. Currently valued at $2,500.
The Macquarie University Garrawi Indigenous Scholarship (supported by the University's Alumni)
Awarded to an Indigenous student enrolled in a postgraduate program. Currently valued at $2,500.
The Alex Mitchell Scholarship (supported by the University's Alumni)
$7,500 over three years awarded to an incoming undergraduate student studying in the Division of Humanities.
The Alumni Prizes
Eight prizes awarded to the most meritorious incoming undergraduate student in each Division. Each currently offered as a $250 book voucher.
The Alumni Awards for Meritorious Performance
Awards made at graduation ceremonies in both Hong Kong and Singapore to the student with the most meritorious performance over all units.
The Macquarie University Science/Technology Prize (supported by the University's Alumni)
Awarded to a science honours student whose work shows outstanding promise in a science discipline and potential for commercial or professional application. Currently valued at $2,500.
