This is a follow-up event to the successful first Science and Technology Postgraduate Reunion held last October.
More about the lecture . . .
Dr David Kellern, CEO National ICT Australia, will outline some of the fascinating applications of "embedded systems", and highlight the technical challenges and economic opportunities before us.
Dr Kellern says, "We may not know exactly what the future will look like but in our daily lives we can get an inkling of the flavour of what's to come. Everyday things are getting smarter. And our lives are becoming increasingly dependent on these smart things.
Cars come with sophisticated control systems that sense their environment and provide greater safety and energy efficiency. The same is true for planes. Built environments automatically adapt heating, lighting, screens and other facilities to provide comfortable, secure surroundings. Intelligent portable medical devices are providing improved health monitoring and management. Intelligent sensor networks with exotic names such as "smart dust" and "mighty motes" are enabling new society-scale applications across cities and rural areas. New mobile phones are delivering on the dream of video communications anywhere/anytime and allowing ubiquitous access to information/entertainment. Smart toys are learning new tricks on their own.
The "intelligence" making all this possible is provided by what we call embedded systems - the invisible combinations of computer and communications hardware and software inside a device. The increasing use of embedded systems and their integration in everyday products is bringing enormous challenges - ultra-low cost yet already high and rapidly increasing complexity, ultra-high reliability and security, and critical real-time performance.
There is a widespread view in the ICT community that a revolution is needed to meet the challenges. Australia is good at the sort of innovation needed in this revolution. There is the opportunity, and significant industry and market demand to build on Australia's existing expertise and develop capability in embedded systems."
History of the College of Science & Technology . . .

Throughout the years, Professor Schwartz has earned a reputation in the media as a reformer in a time of industry change and as a results-driven CEO not afraid to try something new.
Professor Schwartz's vision is for Macquarie University to be an advanced research university with many centres of excellence. "Research drives a university's reputation and it is also what makes for great teaching . . . I believe that Macquarie can and will continue to grow in research strength and can be seen as one of the country's leading research universities."
Professor Schwartz notes that universities are engines of social mobility, giving students from all backgrounds a chance to achieve their potential, to open their minds to lifelong learning and to make their contribution to the larger society.
At this year's special Annual Parliament House Luncheon, Professor Schwartz will share more about his inspiring vision for the future of Macquarie University.

Macquarie's Global Leadership Symposium Series
Immerse yourself in a cross-cultural conference with a difference. Macquarie's Global Leadership Symposium Series offers a unique way to learn about leadership and international issues –providing knowledge you can apply back to your own field of study or work.
GLSS is a residential event that takes place in an international location – typically traveling to more than one country - over a two week period. The event is run every September, to coincide with the mid-semester break. The event is open to alumni as well as to current students.
GLSS has the professional atmosphere of conference, with briefings by experts from industry and the non-profit sectors; but rather than sit in a classroom, delegates visit the places and projects where these professionals actually work. This exposure to companies, NGO projects and government provides insight into different organisations, their leadership and challenges.
For more general information about the Macquarie Global Leadership Symposium Series, please visit: http://www.international.mq.edu.au/GLSS

Perge and Antioch-by-Pisidia, two cities in the southern part of Anatolian Turkey, are closely linked in the account of Paul's first missionary journey given in the Acts of the Apostles. Despite their relative geographical proximity, however, at the time of Paul's visits, there was a fundamental difference between the two cities: one was Greek, the other was Roman.
Perge's origin, so far as we can tell, lay with indigenous Anatolian peoples supplemented by the settlement of Greeks. Perge grew during the Hellenistic period after the conquests of Alexander the Great and became a flourishing port during the Imperial period due to its location on the western bank of the Cestrus River.
Antioch's situation was well inland from the southern Anatolian coastline and some 1200 m above sea level in the Taurus mountain range. Seleucus I, who ruled the region as a successor of Alexander the Great in the late fourth and early third centuries BC, first defined Antioch as a place of importance. In order to guard the vital roadway which linked Anatolia with places further East, he settled Macedonian soldiers there.
The Roman emperor Augustus also appreciated the strategic location of Antioch and included it as one of the veteran colonies he established in the Pisidian region around 25 BC. The large influx of new inhabitants from the Roman army at that time changed the Antioch's character from essentially Greek to Roman.
The physical remains of both Perge and Antioch allow us to reconstruct much more about their nature and their populations than the Acts of the Apostles tells us. At each of the cities, architectural and sculptural evidence is complemented by a large number of inscriptions which speak to us about the social, political and religious concerns of the inhabitants. Thus, the on-going work of archaeologists allows us to expand our understanding of the places that Paul and his group visited and also to set their mission to preach the Gospel in a broader cultural context.

Speakers: Hon.Professor Peter Anderson, Director and Sandra Bilson, Operations Manager, Policing, Intelligence and Counter TerrorismUnit
RSVP : Monday 27 March 2006, Alumni Office

Bookings Essential
The Director, Hon. Professor Anderson, will outline the rationale and vision for the establishment of the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism. A key driver for the Centre will be the coalescence of intelligence and, at points, operations between police, intelligence agencies and the military. Professor Anderson believes there is a strong need for an inter-disciplinary approach combined with robust research and development, to better inform practice and decision making at political, strategic and operational levels.
Since the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001, there have been numerous reviews of state intelligence capabilities.Sandra Bilson will provide an overview of these numerous reviews arising in the wake of September 11, Beslan, the two Bali attacks, as well as the sinking of the Suspect Illegal Entry Vessel X. Such incidents are often defined, albeit retrospectively, as intelligence failures. The reviews all share an organisational focus, critically examining funding, line management, chain of command, communication practices, accountability and performance. However, at the baseline, human decision making processes, strategy formulation and implementation also contribute to such terrible outcomes. Sandra outlines the need for future research into the analytical processes, the thinking and reasoning of individual intelligence and policy analysts.
