Alumni Lecture

Date: Thursday 3 November 2005
Venue: Macquarie University Campus SAM Level 3
Guest Speaker: Professor Kenneth Sheedy, Director for Ancient Numismatic Studies
Time: 6:30pm
Topic: The Face of Alexander the Great

The appearance of the famous Macedonian king was well known in antiquity. Coins depicting Alexander the Great have long been cited as key evidence for our modern understanding of how Alexander himself wished to be remembered. The statues, mosaics and wall paintings of the king, which have survived, are all later copies (some of a much later date). But the first coin portraits of Alexander were in fact struck by Ptolemy I of Egypt after lexander's death, and their image of the king reveals a number of different influences, which undermine any attempt to treat these coins as a simple 'mirror'.

Topic: Wild Solutions: how Biodiversity is money in the bank

Bioprospecting is undergoing a quiet revolution, as industries as varied as pharmaceuticals, mining, engineering, construction and agriculture are discovering a previously unsuspected array of organisms of commercial value. Many species, most of them obscure, tiny and often bizarre, including bacteria, insects and worms, are turning a profit. The future could be dazzling because, at the beginning of the 21st century, we have explored less than 5 percent of all species for their commercial value.

12.00pm Lecture 2: INDIGENOUS VIEWS ON AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY, CULTURE AND HISTORY
Speaker: A/Prof Anita Heiss
Deputy Director, Warawara Dept of Indigenous Studies

Anita Heiss is an author, academic, social commentator and cultural activist. In her presentation she will use her published work "Sacred Cows" to take a satirical look at Australian cultural icons like Skippy and Vegemite while considering drinking habits of Australians.

She will also read from her best-selling novel "Who Am I? The diary of Mary Talence, Sydney 1937" and transport the audience back in time through the diary of a young girl taken to the Bomaderry Aboriginal Children's Home at the age of 5 before and later fostered by a family in St Ives.

1.00pm Lecture 3: "REPORTAGE OF WAR"
Speaker: Dr Denise Leith
Honorary Associate, Department of Politics and International Relations

'Perhaps more so than any other profession the journalists and photographers who document war are challenged personally and professionally by the scenes they witness, the choices they make, and the threats they face.

Do you pick up the starving child and carry him or her to the feeding station; do you give your sandwich and bottle of water to someone in dire need; do you take the wounded civilian to the hospital? Can you predict the consequences of your actions?

While these issues colour our coverage of war, is war reportage facing another challenge? Have journalists become 'A' grade targets in war, not only to undisciplined militias, but to some of the most disciplined militaries in the world?

2.00pm Lecture 2: "VIOLENCE IN ANCIENT ROME"
Speaker: Dr Thomas Hillard
Senior Lecturer, Dept of Ancient History

Rome was a violent society. In large part, Roman success was built upon that violence; but Rome's survival depended upon the containment of that violence within Roman Society.

The inability to resolve this tension brought down the Roman republic.
